A&H is a made-to-order window manufacturer primarily serving the East Coast. With a 144,000-square-foot plant, the company also assembles Therma-Tru doors for distribution. ABC WINDOW CO. INC.


Product lines: Aluminum and vinyl windows and sliding doors.


The company manufactures, sells, distributes and installs aluminum and vinyl sliding windows and patio doors to residential builders in Southern California. In 2004, ABC completed a recapitalization with management and William Blair Capital Partners VII. The Chicago-based private equity group invested $27 million in the window manufacturer to enable it to better pursue its growth strategy. For 2005, the company plans to launch a new line of deluxe French sliding vinyl patio doors.


ACCUWELD LLC

The manufacturer moves from the $30 million to $40 million category this year into the $40 million to $50 million sales category. Focusing on the replacement market, AccuWeld’s parent company is Arch America, Pennsauken, NJ, which also owns Ultra Hardware Products LLC, a supplier of builders and OEM window and door hardware; Aluminum Shapes LLC, an aluminum extruder; and the Delair Group LLC, a producer of pools and fencing.


ACTION WINDOOR TECHNOLOGY INC.

Product lines: Aluminum and thermally broken windows. Vinyl windows with or without wood jamb extensions. Aluminum patio doors. Insulating units.


AWT started producing windows in 2000, and with new manufacturing and distribution centers located in Houston and San Antonio, the company currently ships windows and patio doors to 16 southern states. Since its inception, AWT sales have increased $10 million each year it has been in business, it reports, enabling the company to move from the $30 million to $40 million sales category to the $40 million to $50 million category. AWT recently invested another $1.5 million in high-productivity automated equipment for its vinyl lines and has introduced a new vinyl series designed for coastal regions where there is a need for higher performance windows.

A vertically integrated manufacturer, Alenco operates plants in Bryan, TX, and Peachtree City, GA. Focusing on windows and doors for single- and multifamily new construction, it distributes its products primarily through a network of independent building materials distributors located in the southwestern and southeastern United States. Linsalata Partners, which also has a stake in Eagle Window & Door, another Top 100 Manufacturer, acquired a stake in Alenco in 2004. Alenco moves up to the $100 million to $200 million category this year from the $75 million to $100 million category.

With a 238,000-square-foot manufacturing and headquarters facility in Edmonton, the company reports it is one of the largest privately owned window and door manufacturers in Canada. The company has sales operations across the country, and also exports products to the United States and overseas. In 2004, it launched two new vinyl lines, as well as a metal-clad vinyl window for high-rise apartment buildings.


ALSIDE WINDOW SYSTEMS

A new investor acquired a 50 percent stake in Associated Materials, parent of Alside Windows, at the end of 2004. Investcorp, a global private equity group that recently owned MW Windows, stepped back into the industry by purchasing half of the company from Harvest Partners, a New York-based private equity firm that took a majority stake in the company several years ago. As far as other business activity, Alside spent 2004 incorporating its 2003 acquisition, Gentek Holdings, into its operations.

Amerimax moved its California manufacturing operation into a new 92,000-square-foot facility in Woodland last year. The facility is 33 percent larger than its previous facility in Sacramento. With a more efficient layout and more delivery docks, the new facility expands capacity and provides faster turnaround times on orders. It is owned by Euramax International, a supplier of fabricated metal products that reports overall annual sales of more than $700 million.

Forbes estimated Andersen’s 2003 sales at $2.15 billion, up from $2 billion in 2002. In 2004, the manufacturer completed a new 150,000-square-foot extrusion facility in North Branch, MN, that produces lineal window and door components made with the company’s Fibrex wood/plastic composite material.


ANLIN WINDOW SYSTEMS


Product lines: Vinyl windows and doors.


Focusing on high-end vinyl replacement windows, Anlin recently completed a $10 million expansion project, including installation of four automated Super Spacer lines for the production of insulating glass. In 2001, it added 115,000 square feet to its plant, bringing the total to 200,000. The company, which had been a licensed manufacturer of CertainTeed Window products, now offers its own line of high-performance products designed specifically for the California market.


ATRIUM WINDOWS & DOORS

Atrium, which states it is the largest manufacturer of residential vinyl and aluminum windows in North America, now operates over 80 manufacturing and distribution centers in 23 states and Mexico. It produces about 7 million windows and patio doors per year and has annual sales of nearly $800 million, according to company officials. Atrium continues to be one of the most active consolidators in the window and door industry. It focuses on the repair and remodeling markets in California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii through an extensive dealer network.


BARBER & ROSS CO.

Established in 1876, Barber & Ross moved its headquarters and primary manufacturing plant from Leesburg, VA, to a new 280,000-square-foot facility in Winchester, VA, last year. The builder-direct supplier and manufacturer of windows, pre-hung doors, mouldings, custom millwork and Euromould polyurethane foam trim products operates four regional manufacturing facilities encompassing more than 600,000 square feet and services nine states.


BFRICH WINDOWS & DOORS


Product lines: Vinyl windows, architectural shapes and patio doors for the remodeling, new construction and light commercial markets.


BFRich entered the Top 100 rankings on its own last year, having been acquired by a management group and Michael D. Sifen, a Virginia real estate developer, in 2003. It was previously owned by Chariot Management. This year, it moves up from the $15 million to $30 million category to the $30 million to $40 million category. BF Rich has been manufacturing windows and doors since 1957 and operates a 120,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that received Window & Door’s Crystal Achievement Award for Most Innovative Plant in 1999.

Previously known as Window Products Inc., the company changed its name to Cascade Windows in 2004 to reflect its signature product line. Having acquired the window manufacturing assets of McVay Brothers Inc., also based in Spokane, as well as Avante Windows in Salt Lake City, in 2002, the company now has two manufacturing plants in Spokane and one in Salt Lake City.


CERTAINTEED CORP., WINDOW PRODUCTGROUP

In an effort to tap into the high-growth markets in the western United States, CertainTeed opened a new multimillion dollar, 229,000-square-foot production facility in W. Sacramento, CA, in 2004, making it the second straight year the company has constructed a new window plant. In 2003, it added a 210,000-square-foot facility in Lebanon, IN. CertainTeed also added Marshall Vinyl Windows in 2002. CertainTeed—also a leading North American manufacturer of vinyl and fiber cement siding; vinyl and composite decking, railing and fencing; residential and HVAC insulation; residential and commercial roofing and pipe and foundation systems—celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004.


CHAMPION WINDOW

Champion sells direct to the homeowner via in-home sales and 55 factory showrooms in 31 states. The company reports that it beautified over 45,000 homes nationwide last year and manufactured well over 200,000 custom windows. Ninety percent of sales are to homeowners. In 2004, the company opened locations in Hartford, CT; Huntsville, AL; Portland, OR; and Long Island, NY, and plans two more openings in 2005. Champion supplies all offices from over 800,000 square feet of combined manufacturing space in Cincinnati and Denver using its own trucking operation, Champion Logistics.

Four Seasons’ parent company is Ultraframe Plc, a publicly traded supplier of glazed conservatory roofing systems in the UK Ultraframe reported sales of $230 million for the year ending October 1, 2004. Founded in 1932, Gerkin moved into a new165,000-square-foot plant and office complex in S. Sioux City in January of 2004. Prior to that, it was located in Sioux City, IA. The company produces Rhino commercial windows and Comfort Series vinyl products, as well as Classic and Uniquely Yours storm doors.


GORELL ENTERPRISES INC.


Product lines: Vinyl windows and doors. Aluminum storm windows and doors. Vinyl conservatories and patio rooms. Aluminum sunrooms.


Gorell manufactures vinyl windows and doors for replacement and new construction applications. It also offers vinyl conservatories under the American Conservatory Systems brand name. Founded in 1946, Bocenor states it is one of Canada’s largest window and door manufacturers, selling products under the Bonneville and Polar names. From its six plants in Quebec, which incorporate more than 500,000 square feet of manufacturing space, the company produces steel doors, patio doors and windows made from wood, aluminum and PVC. At the end of 2004, it announced plans to invest $3 million, primarily in new equipment, to increase production capacity, enhance its quality of service and lower operating costs.

Founded by Irving Rogow, it remains privately owned, continuing to develop products and options to meet a variety of customer needs in the new construction and replacement markets. Its specialty glass line includes 3M Accentrim beveled glass, Safe-Gard safety laminated glass, etched glass and resin art glass, which can all be incorporated into a wide range of the company’s windows and doors.


INTERNATIONAL ALUMINUM CORP.

International Aluminum is an integrated manufacturer of a diverse line of aluminum and vinyl products. The publicly traded firm operates 14 North American subsidiaries, including International Window Corp., which produces aluminum and vinyl windows and doors. The residential window unit operates manufacturing plants in South Gate and Hayward, CA, and Phoenix. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2004, it reported residential sales of approximately $65 million and commercial product sales of nearly $100 million.

Started in 1960, Jeld-Wen grew rapidly during the ‘90s with numerous acquisitions. In 2003, it launched a major re-branding initiative to sell all of its products under the Jeld-Wen name. Kolbe & Kolbe introduced a new Kolbe Windows & Doors logo in 2004, designed to bring a greater brand unity to its growing line of products. The company continues to produce wood window and door products in its hometown of Wausau, WI, where it recently expanded its main, 725,000-square-foot facility with the addition of some 250,000 square feet and 25 new loading docks. The expansion garnered Kolbe & Kolbe a Window & Door 2003 Crystal Achievement Award for Most Innovative Plant, thanks to the addition of a state-of-the-art training and development center. The company also operates a distribution operation in Bend, OR, and a vinyl window plant in Manawa, WI. It manufactures Acore steel and fiberglass doors in Coldwater, MI.


LARSON MANUFACTURING CO.


Product lines: Aluminum and wood-core storm doors.


The company reports it is the largest manufacturer of storm doors in the country. Started in 1956, Larson now distributes its doors through a nationwide dealer network.


LINCOLN WOOD PRODUCTS INC.

Marvin opened its first East Coast plant in 2004. The new 200,000-square-foot facility in Roanoke, VA, produces the Integrity line of windows and doors, combining a fiberglass composite exterior with a wood interior. The facility is expected to create 150 jobs by the end of 2005 and 350 by the end of 2008. It also has a joint venture operation, Tecton Products, that manufactures fiberglass pultrusions. Marvin has a network of wholesale distribution branches and approximately 4,500 retail dealers in the United States. It also sells products in Canada, Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East.


MASONITE INTERNATIONAL CORP.


Headquarters: Mississauga, ON


Product lines: Steel, wood, fiberglass and composite entry and patio doors. Interior, French and bi-fold doors.


Pending approval by shareholders, the publicly traded Masonite will be owned by Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co., one of the world’s largest private equity firms, by the end of February. The world’s largest door manufacturer, Masonite reported 2003 sales of $1.78 billion. Based on the first three quarters of last year, 2004 annual sales should surpass the $2 billion mark. All together, Masonite operates over 70 manufacturing and distribution facilities in 12 countries in North and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa and employs over 12,000 people serving customers in over 50 countries.
