Windows Photo Viewer 7 For Windows 7

Windows 7 has a default picture viewer called Windows Photo Viewer which is similar the one in Windows Vista. Even though Microsoft have changed the look and feel of Windows 7, Windows Photo Viewer has largely been untouched.

When you open any image in Windows Photo Viewer, you are reminded of Windows Vista. If you want to add a brand new eye-candy look so that it looks more like Windows 7, meet Windows Photo Viewer 7.

All it does is change the UI buttons of Windows Photo Viewer so that it looks more sexier. It doesn’t include an installation file, all you have to do is copy the PhotoViewer.dll file to the Windows Photo Viewer folder inside Program Files folder. But make sure you have the backup of the original PhotoViewer.dll file too, just in case you need to bring back the old look.

if I download windows photo viewer, will I have the options to brighten or darken or blur the pictures I have installed on puter?

I'm leaving this question here in the hopes that either the author of the original post, or someone reading it will have an answer for me. After recently upgrading to Windows 7, the Windows Photo Viewer behaves differently. I can no longer select multiple photos, and print several on one page. The Photo viewer still gives me the option of printing 2, 4, 9 or 36 up on a page, but only 1 photo (or repeats of 1 photo). WTF? Am I alone in this, or is this a new “feature?” Why would Microsoft remove functionality?

OK this is simple. Best to have all the pictures you want to print in the same folder.

1. select the photos you want to print first.

2. click on the “print” button or right click on a selected photo and select print from the context menu.

3. Choose the size photo you want (this determines how many pictures print on one page).

4. Choose how many copies you want.

5. be sure to select the right paper type & size.

OK, I get it, and THANK YOU! The old version let you pick print AFTER the preview option had already been selected, and NOW you just select the photos and press print. I can't say it's more intuitive, but I'm happy that it works.

Hi, i've just read the question about printing 4 or more photos on one page and i am having the same problem. I have read the answer that you have to select the photos first and then press print but am i missing something but how do i select the photos i want? Each time i click on a photo, then another, the first one is deselected. Does this make sense? i have spent all day trying to work this out.

the easiest way to select more than 1 photo is to hold down the CTRL key while clicking on the photos.

One jpg file has 3 pages. How can I select which one to print? I only want 1 page of the 3, and it is of letter size.

(I hate windows 7 v. Wind xp. Hate it with a passion. So much so, that I bought a mac for my personal use)

I don't know how 1 jpg is 3 pages but, you decide what size to make the print and how many prints you want. The computer then figures out the best way to print them. It doesn't make a diference how big or small the picture is. If the picture is 8 x 10 and you want 2 copies 4 x 6 well the computer knows that you can't fit them both on one page. So it will print 2 pages. If you want 3 x 5's they will both be on one page. WYSIWYG

I have the same issue. When I scan a multiple page document, it creates one jpg. When I select to print, I want to be able to select which pages to print and can’t.

hey…i hope that my problem gets an answer from someone reading it.I got windows 7 for my system and the Windows Photo viewer 7 is not having any edit options.I am unable to change the features of my photos and this is frustrating me…anybody..PLEASE HELP ME.

ok there are 2 different programs. one is windows photo viewer which has no edit features and the other is Windows Live Photo Gallery which has the features you are looking for. Right click on the photo and select “Open with” and choose windows live photo gallery” then click the fix button for the editable commands.

I cannot find windows live photo gallery anywhere in my computer, i do have an actual ligit windows 7.

what do you mean it is largely unchanged? They took away the “Fix” feature that allows you to get rid of red eye, crop quickly, then scroll to the next picture. Now it wants you to open up a separate program for that. I don't want to open up a bulky program to remove red-eye when I have 200 pictures to remove red-eye for. Any way to get the Vista version of this program back??

I agree with Greenleegazette that is is worse than the one in XP but then a lot of the interfaces are in Windows 7. Fortunately they still have good programmers at M/S if not GUI marketeers.

OMG. So I was so happy to reformat my computer w/ with Windows 7! Just when I think all is good, the “fix” button is missing. After going through gimp, paint and the crappy windows media center- I am at a loss. I have over 10g of photos from China and Disney worlds and I am pretty much screwed. Is there an easier way.

sorry but I don't understand the question. If you ever edit a picture, you should always do a “Save As” and give it a different name. This way you can always go back to the original picture if you decide you didn't care for your edit.

I have a question about the windows photo viewer in Windows 7. In the Vista version of Photo Viewer, there was a 'info' button at the top and when you click this button while viewing photos you get the file name, tags, and rating on the right hand pane. In this mode you can easily flip through your photos and rename them and tag them as well.

The Photo viewer in 7 is missing this 'info' button so you can no longer do this. To that point there is no easy way to rename your photos at all. While viewing photos in the viewer you have to right click the photo, select properties, and then the general tab, and then you can rename your photo.

WHY DID MSFT TAKE THIS AWAY.

In photo viewer you can still access the properties of the photo by holding down

“Alt + Enter” or you could click on “file” and go down to properties. Or if you want to get real savy; in the folder that your picture resides click on the “Organize” tab go to Layout and select the preview pane. (this works with many different type of documents besides pictures). By dragging the divider left or right you can change the size of the preview pane. The highlighted file in the left side will appear in the right side with out having to open any programs. you can still access the properties of the picture by hitting Alt + Enter. By the way, you can also use the thumbnail view as well. Good Luck

Windows Viewer is ONLY accessible by right clicking on a photo. On the context menu that appears, go to open with and the viewer should be listed there.

I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I do think the picture quality is better with Windows 7, but it has lost one of its best features; the ability to resize the photo using a mouse wheel. Is there any way to turn this back on?

my mouse wheel resizes the picture just like it always did. Did you know you can use photo viewer as a slide show too? Just hit F11 and all the files in the directory will slide thru.

The mouse wheel resize the picture, but before (winxp) the quality after resizing (more than 100%) was very good. Now its very bad. Also i think when i opened a gif animation in winxp the picture was moving. It doesnt do that in Win 7.

I like the photo viewer, but these 2 things is annoying.

Does anyone knowif there is a way to print photo paths when printing the photos? This used to be available in XP but can’t locate this function with 7.

Got a question/problem. Thinking I and gonna HATE the option for printing I now have with Windows Photo Viewer. I can’t seem to find any way that I can put more than one pic on a page to print. Who really needs 4 3×5 s of the same pic? I mean seriously, come on!! Thought Windows & was so user friendly…Well looks like I am gonna have to go out and buy a print program that will do what I need and want to do. I have a problem. Received a fax, via fax-email. The document is opened with Windows Photo Viewer. The fax has 4 pages. I only want to print 1 page. How can I select which one to print? I only want 1 page of the 4, and it is of letter size.

you can open many pictures in other programs besides photo viewer. picture formats vary .JPG .GIF .PGP .TIF .BMP .RIF .RAW .TGA .TIF .WMF are just some of the many types of picture types. Photo Viewer was designed for photos not faxes. your fax software should allow you to view the documents and the printer should allow you a “print selected” option for what to print.

I just purchased a new emachine tower and EVERY time I go to open anything including the Internet I get a “Windows Live Messenger – Windows Photo Viewer” screen that pops up with this message: “Windows Photo Viewer can’t open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn’t support this file format, or you don’t have the latest updates to Photo Viewer.” Anybody have any idea/s on how to fix this issue?

when in windows photo viewer when i m watching a photo and i click on slide show or f11 then why it starts with a random photo and not with the selected photo only. any one help….

slideshow will do all the pictures in the directory. you can always make a new directory and add only the files that you want in the slideshow into that directory.

Once again the Microsoft morons have fixed some features and purposely disabled or broke other features just so we the public can spend billions of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on Windows 8.

By the way at least everything in XP actually worked until they started breaking it with vista and now windows 7.

there isnt an Fix/ autofix option in dis version of photoviewer. vista had dt..but i cundt find it in windows 7.

by the way,how do u crop an image using this windows photo viewer ?? earlier i had another one which had the option of fixing red eye,setting brightness,color and contrast n croppin the picture in vista….but aftr i installed windows 7 am not getting those options,instead u have to open the picture using paint n then crop or do whatever….

My embroidery program has somehow got to be the default for the files that should be opened with windows photo viewer, when I try to reset the default , it tells me windows explorer has stopped running and will restart. I am unable to change the default

you can change the default program for types of files by;

1. right click on the file

2. on the menu that pops up, go to “Open With”

3. on the new list of programs to choose from, at the bottom of the list is the “choose default program”

4. on the next screen you have a choice of all the programs that are installed on your computer than should be able to open that particular type of file. If the program you are looking for isn’t on the list, you can choose browse and find the file manually.

5. make sure there is a check in the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”

5. select ok when finished

6. go back and double click the picture and the new program should open it.

try faststone image viewer (totally freeware). guarantee you’ll never use MS’s photo viewer or it’s gallery again (besides who want’s MS’s server to keep a copy of all your pics).

I’m not quite sure what people are having problems with. Its working perfectly for me. The only thing I can think of that I’ve done differently, than the readme file directs, was replacing both the x86 and x64 versions of the file.

Currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, x64. Same core files as Windows 7, Aero enabled, Peak, all the goodies.

Afterthought… People having issues, try opening the old PhotoViewer.dll and search for the following… Only copy whats between the “Quotes”, but not the quotes themselves. And report back. I’m not the developer, just curious. The versions are identical in both the original, and downloaded file for me. Good luck. =)

OK so in Vista, XP and other earlier Windows versions you could edit tags &c direct from Windows viewer. How the Hell do you do it now? Why do these people keep fixing things that don’t need fixing?

I agree. The Vista photo viewer was excellent and allowed editing of image tags, like comments, etc. This cut down viewer is rubbish.

i have the same problem. i just lost a whole bunch of pictures because this stupid crap cant read my pictures…..you need to fix this asap. this is ridiculous! how am i supposed to enjoy this program with so many glitches ! and pictures are irreplaceable! especially when i am supposed to use a program to save them to my computer and it automatically deletes from my camera so i can take new pictures and have more fun! i am seriously irritated!

I don’t have the rotate view buttons active anymore on Windows photo viewer. Some have and others not. Download was done the same day. Any tip you can give me to get these buttons activated again?

I’m hoping someone can answer this as my searches haven’t turned up one. Some pictures, not all but some don’t display properly in photo viewer for me. If I look at the picture preview in the folder or open the image in paint I can see it normally but if I try to open it with photo viewer the image doesn’t display. What I get is a smear of colour in a narrow vertical line.

I have the same problem except I have horizontal lines. I have tried to search for a solution but have come up empty handed.

Does anyone know how to permanently have the “Fit picture to frame” option unticked in the print options? I’m guessing a registry change?

Photo viewer 7 is NOT the same as Vista. With Vista when you start the slide show you have options on how you would like to view them, ie fade in fade out, pictures stack, zoom in zoom out, etc…

There is only one option in photo 7 which is shuffle.

It sucks! you cant move the image in x or y directions! no preview either.

Hey Jimbo i know this is an old conversation maybe you or maybe somebody else can help me. I am trying to print a contact sheet of pictures however one or more pictures always comes out rotated either clockwise or counter-clockwise to the rest of the photos. Are these particular photos rotated that way because they are a different size in proportion to the rest of these pictures? Is there a simple fix i can do so that these picutes all show up facing the same direction? Any answer would be of great help! Thanks.
