Ask a Tradesman

Conversions - General Question

What sort of tradesman do i need to convert a window to a patio door?

I am in a semi-detached property & have called the local council & they advised I do not need planning permission. What sort of trade do I need? & is there anything else I should consider prior to starting the work? Thanks

Prior to starting work, things you need to consider will include.

1, Is the kettle working(with a back up incase) Have I got enough teabags, milk and sugar in?

2, What type of biscuits would they like, a hobnob, a country cream or bourbon?

3, Would they prefer a full english on arrival, or bacon sandwiches with side salad at lunchtime?

Seriously, A small general builder, a bricky and a chippy, or a window fitting company would do that kind of job, just make sure you ask about a fensa certificate for the door. It's down to you to get one.

Hope this helps you

Need a Conversion Specialist?

Post a job on MyBuilder to find a quality, local tradesperson.

A good general builder would be able to sort that out, if you list it under "Conversions - General" the right people will see it.

It's not a complicated job, but it's important to have it done properly. It will involve supporting the wall, removing the window lintel and replacing it with an RSJ (may need a pair or a steel lintel depending on the wall type) to carry the weight of the wall above. Once that's all sorted it's a matter of removing the window and wall to suit the patio door that you want to have installed. The only things which may be additional are repositioning raditators and electrical sockets if they are currently below the window, making good the plaster and redecorating.

Usually most window firms will carry out small jobs like this but you might need a building warrent first.
